Day 11 of the Oiselle Chase the Bird Challenge couldn’t have been any better. After going to my favorite yoga class this morning (you can read about it HERE if you missed it), my daughter and I went for a hike/trail run up to Inspiration Point later in the afternoon .
I have to admit, I had low expectations for how much she might enjoy this outing and/or how far she might want to go as the trail is mostly steep, but I let her be in charge of the pace and just cruised along and enjoyed our time together.
And guess what? She completely blew me away with her rock star attitude.
She only asked me a few times how much farther we had to go to get to the top, and I think it was mostly to get herself mentally prepared to tackle it. She even took off running many times, completely unprompted. My little trail runner!
Okay, I must confess, I brought a secret weapon with me: Smarties. You know those wickedly sweet, artificially colored little candies that come in a roll? Yep, I hate to admit it, we both love them. Bad mommy. After the first half mile, which was all uphill, I pulled this sweet little surprise out of my pocket. And it worked wonders. Every 1/4 mile after that, I let her indulge in another sweet treat and it was just enough to fire her up to keep tackling the trail.
Here she is nearing the top.
And this was the reward at the top.
Yay! We did it!
Yep, she worked hard. Time for a well-deserved rest.
Can’t wait to Chase the Bird with my sweet girl again soon! Life is sweet. xo
Great story – amazing what sugar can motivate us to do!
Thank you again for sending me those PS trails…Greg and I tackled the one closest to us on Sunday morning. We picked up the trail on the end of Ramone. Super easy to start, and then immediately lost the trail and were AWOL! It’s not as clearly marked as Jesusita! And since the drought there is very little growth at all, so everything looks fair game to walk on. We eventually made it back on the trail as more people started coming across the ridge, we just targeted them and moved our way towards the trail. From then on we were more careful about which fork to take. It was gorgeous and rigorous and we loved it. Thank you for sharing it with us!
And congrats on the house sale!! Where to now?

Thanks, Michelle. I know…”bad mom”…with the sugar thing, but I know what a little nibble of sugar does for me on a long run–makes me happy and helps get me to where I want to be. 🙂 I’m certain she would have done it anyway, but there might have been some complaining involved in the process.
Yay about your Palm Springs adventure! I was off the beaten track for a while too, but it all comes back into a fairly clear trail at some point. We’ll be heading there again over Thanksgiving so I’m sure I’ll be cruising along one of those trails again.
As far as what’s next with the house moving adventure…we found a new place about 3 minutes from where we live. It’s close, but totally different. The house will be the most contemporary thing we’ve ever lived in in 25 years, but that’s not saying a lot since everything we’ve ever owned has been between the 1880s and 1920s. We love old houses, but we’re excited to try something new(er). Stay tuned…

You really inspired me to get up and out yesterday. No more procrastinating over learning to use clipless peddles on my new bike. I got up and gave it a good try with only 1 mishap and the time really flew. Still a fledgling, but will fly one of these days.

Great job Cheryl!!! How exciting to be trying something new. You’ll have those clipless peddles down in no time. By the way, I don’t know anybody who hasn’t tipped over at least once–myself included. Get out there and keep enjoying the flight!
